Author talks

In my author talks I share how much I loved reading and writing as a kid, but how it actually took me a while as an adult to be brave enough to try getting published. I describe how I get ideas for my stories, where my inspiration comes from and the importance of seeing yourself represented in the stories around you.

inspired by art

In this writing workshop I use examples from my two novels Iris and the Tiger and The Gaps to explain how visual art inspires my writing. Participants will be led through a series of writing exercises that use my favourite paintings, photographs and sculptures for inspiration, dipping into world-building, plotting and character development.

stories from the archive

This writing workshop shows how many amazing stories exist in Australian archives, and encourages participants to see historical documents and artefacts as inspiration for personal and creative writing. We’ll look at documents created by the White Australia policy, family photos, and a digital criminal justice archive, to think more about the stories that Australians collect and tell.
